What Makes a Financial Planner Certified and Why it Matters

There are a lot of people out there ready and willing to tell you what to do with your money. Many carry titles like financial advisor, investment manager, and certified financial planner. The question, which one is right for your financial needs?

For those looking to improve their budget, save for retirement, find their way out of debt, and ultimately, secure their financial future, you need a certified financial planner.

“Certified” isn’t just something added to a title to sound professional. Certification must be earned through education, examination, experience, and ethics.

In fact, these are the four core requirements set forth by the CFP® Board, a non-profit organization that handles CFP® training and certification.

As certified financial planners, we are required to act in the best interest of our client. We owe no allegiance to larger corporations, nor do we have backend deals that provide kickbacks for pushing a client in a certain direction.

Our CFP® team exists to help you make the most out of your money. That means we help you to create a plan that’s best for your life.

Thanks to our training, we can guide you on virtually all money related plans, from basic budgeting to estate planning and investments.

We can even help with your taxes.

CFP® or ChFC®? What’s the Difference?

If you take a closer look at the team at KB&P, you may notice one of our advisors has the title ChFC®. This stands for Chartered Financial Consultant. The path to becoming a ChFC® is very similar to becoming a CFP®.

In fact, they both feature the same core classes. In addition to those core classes, a ChFC® takes some additional elective courses, allowing them to deepen their expertise in certain areas of financial planning.

The most important thing to know is whether you’re paired with a CFP® or a ChFC®, you’ll receive professional guidance and hands-on service from KB&P.
